Forum: netlabels Subject: Would Folktunes.org be welcome here?

I emailed this to info@archive.org a few days ago, and I thought I would get some input from the netlabels board. How would you feel about Folktunes.org becoming a Netlabel collection? The concept is somewhere between Open Source Audio and Netlabels.

---

Hi, my name is is Forrest Oliphant, and I'm starting work on folktunes.org, the "Folk Tunes Archive for Teaching and Learning." The purpose of this collection is to collect and make available different renditions of public-domain folk music. Folk music is unique in that often you attribute the style in which you play to whomever taught you the song, rather than a specific copyright holder. The ideal setting for learning tunes is in a live, one-on-one session with a friend or acquaintance. However, folktunes.org and archive.org have the potential to give an alternative for when this is not possible.

Folktunes.org is and will remain hosted by Ibiblio. It will become an information frontpage for how to contribute to and use the recordings hosted on archive.org. The original plan was for ibiblio to host the audio files as well, but it seems archive.org is better suited for this.

Wonderful. We would love the collection.

Personally, I would love to have recordings of all the songs in Rise Up Singing, for instance, that could be shared.

simon at archive dot org has been organizing the net.labels, and that might be a good place to put it.

up to you guys.

Forum: netlabels Subject: spot-on

Yeah, the idea was to have a place to go to be able to hear all of those songs from various fake books played by different folks on different instruments. I will be in contact with Simon, but thinking more about it it does seem like this might be better suited as a non-netlabel audio collection. We'll figure it out.

Cool, I'm on it - I agree, probably a netlabel-like collection, but split out separately within audio.
